Custom Project Workflow for Electrical Enclosures

OEM equipment projects often need more than a standard enclosure size. Cable entries may need to match a machine frame, internal components may require a specific layout, and the enclosure may need to remain consistent across repeat production.

At BOWO, we normally start with a suitable standard enclosure platform and then review the project-specific requirements around openings, internal space, mounting and access. This is usually more practical than creating a completely new enclosure structure for every project.

Start With the Equipment Requirement

For a custom electrical enclosure project, the first step is to understand what the enclosure needs to contain and how it will be installed.

Typical information includes the available installation space, internal component layout, cable-entry direction, required openings, mounting method and expected order quantity.

This helps us determine whether the project should begin with a general waterproof electrical enclosure or a more specialized product family.

Choose the Right Enclosure Platform Before Customizing It

For general equipment wiring, an F Series waterproof junction box or AG Series enclosure can provide a suitable base for custom openings and OEM installation requirements.

If the project is mainly based around DIN rail breakers, a DIN rail distribution box is usually a better starting point. For multi-branch field wiring, a terminal block junction box can be more suitable than modifying a general empty enclosure.

Machine-side controls should also be treated separately. If the main requirement is for push buttons, selectors or indicators, a dedicated push button control station usually provides a cleaner layout than adding multiple operator openings to a general box.

Custom Openings Need to Match the Internal Layout

Custom cable entries and cutouts are one of the most common enclosure requirements, but the opening position should not be decided from the outside wall alone.

Cable glands, connectors and locknuts also occupy internal space. An opening that fits externally can still interfere with terminals, DIN rail components or conductor routing inside the enclosure.

For repeat production, we therefore prefer to review the opening drawing together with the internal component layout. The enclosure size, opening position and internal clearance should be confirmed as one design.

Standard Enclosure or Modified Enclosure?

Not every OEM project needs a fully custom box.

If a standard BOWO enclosure already provides the required dimensions, protection structure and access method, modifying only the necessary openings is often the more straightforward option.

We would normally recommend another enclosure family instead when the internal layout becomes crowded, the cable-entry pattern changes significantly, the project requires a dedicated DIN rail or terminal structure, or the original enclosure does not provide enough depth for the final assembly.

The goal is not to customize as much as possible. It is to use the simplest enclosure configuration that remains practical for installation, wiring and repeat production.

Repeat Production Should Use a Fixed Drawing

For OEM equipment, the enclosure should become a repeatable production component once the design is approved.

The final production drawing should identify the enclosure model, opening positions, cover option, mounting details and any agreed customization. This helps keep later orders consistent instead of treating every batch as a new modification project.

Information for an Accurate Quotation

For a custom electrical enclosure project, send us:

  • required enclosure dimensions or available installation space;
  • internal component layout or component list;
  • cable-entry or cutout drawing;
  • gland, connector or operator sizes;
  • required IP rating;
  • mounting requirements;
  • cover preference;
  • expected order quantity.

With this information, BOWO can review whether the project should use a standard enclosure, a modified standard enclosure or another product family better suited to the final equipment layout.
